Bathroom renovation mistakes
As a tiling expert, in this article, I would like to focus on tiling-relevant mistakes you should avoid for your next bathroom.
Mistake #1: Improper tiles
The types of tile used in bathrooms should be strong, durable, and slip-resistant. The options become much simpler once you whittle down to these characteristics; choose a color and a shape and go from there.
All tiles are rated for different purposes. Be sure you pick tiles that are appropriate for the shower. It would help if you remembered to check the specs on your tile to ensure it is rated for wet applications and choose different tiles for the floor and walls of your shower or a single tile for both that is proper for the shower floor.
Mistake #2: Wrong grout
Grout is a tiny element in your bathroom. But it’s imperative as it blocks off water and dirt, strengthens the structural integrity of a tile installation, and makes up differences between individual tiles.
If you choose the wrong grout, it will cause leakage and many more troubles… to come.
The question should be: Is the grout in a high splash zone or a reasonably dry place?
Mistake #3: Overrating your skills
There are many bathroom projects that you can DIY. However, trying to tackle the tasks of bathroom waterproofing and tiling is not an intelligent decision. Many DIYers overrate their skills and venture into “life-threatening areas.” It is far easier and time and money-saving to book a trusted tiler (such as Cozy Tiling) for a few workdays than spending weeks and months doing it on your own. Not to mention that it might end up with a fortune to fix the issues caused by a faulty bathroom.
Mistake #4: Cutting corners
Labour for tile installation is always much higher than the tile price and much higher than you think. But it is a huge mistake to try cutting corners by hiring a cowboy, skipping the waterproofing stage, or buying low-quality materials. You may also be tempted to save money by installing bathroom tiles on top of existing tiles or wood surfaces. If so, you should expect to pay a much higher price later when the leakage happens as it damages your bathroom and other spaces in your property, such as the carpet in the living room, and dampen the frames.
“You get what you pay for” is always true, especially in the New Zealand market.
There are no cutting corners when it comes to installing shower tiles. Even one small oversight can spell disaster.
You can save costs in many other ways, such as limiting unused bathroom fixtures/features, which all come at a cost. You should ask yourself: How often will you use it?
