Choosing a tiler: the qualified one or the cheaper the better?

Failure to choose a good tiler can put you at a risk of paying a huge to fix major problems to your property.

When you think about booking a tiler, on which criterion will you base?

The one who offers the lower quote.

Or

The one who is certified and experienced with good references.

What do you think about tiling jobs?

It is just a labor job.

Or

It requires a specialist skillset, complying with BRANZ. This includes (but not limited): mathematics and measurement skills, knowledge to use tile tools, an eye for design, ability to pay attention to details and strong manual skills.

The finish of a tiler tells his skills!

Let me tell you some stories. Then, you can decide:

 1. A client called us to urgently book for our service as a tile in his bathroom was broken and fell off. It was a dangerous situation. Luckily, no one was having a shower at that time.

When Cozy Tiling’s a tiler came to help, he found out that: the tiles in the bathroom were technically laid in a wrong way. Most clearly, no adhesive material was seen.

2. A client contacted us for the leakage in his bathroom. There is space between grout and sealant, storing the water and causing the leakage.

3. A client asked for help as a “cowboy” failed to fit tiles to the edge of the vanity properly. The mathematics and measurement skills were not seen in this case.

When we asked her to wait until we sent the quote. She said that she no longer cared about how much it cost because finding some one offering the lowest quote led her to this situation.

Cozy Tiling’s a tiler removed the tiles and laid the new ones.

4. A client would like to do a feature floor in his bathroom, he bought tiles, which require our tiler to arrange them in different ways, to create different features. The owner, depending on these plans, to choose the one he liked best.

Tiles vary in color, shape, and size, a good tiler needs an eye for design, rather than simple technical know-how.

5. A client called us to fix her waterproofing layer as she found tiny holes on it.

Yes, her instinct was right as with the eyes, she could see the holes, the leakage could not be avoided.

Somebody used a short cut to do her waterproofing.

Tips for choosing a good tiler:

If you would like the tiler do waterproofing as well, it is necessary for him to provide you the warranty certificate for the waterproofing product he used. This means: he participated in the training courses for applying this product and got a certificate and registration number from the company of the product.

Better, the tiler is a producer statement author (PSA), a council-approved professional, that issues producer statement and confirms the building work complies with the Building Code.

In this case, to be the PSA, the tiler needed to provide the documents proving that he is a qualified tiler, a qualified waterproofing specialist, three references from trusted construction companies and other relevant documents.

Besides, you should check his previous products and paid attention to details as the finish tell difference in skills among tilers.

Most importantly, you should have a well-planned budget to prepare for your renovation plan.

If you choose a tiler merely because of the low labour cost, you should give a second thought as you might take a risk to pay a huge amount in the future to fix the major damage to your property, caused by “cowboys”.

Please come to talk with us, Cozy Tiling, your trusted tiler. We are happy to help.
